An initial base line motor and cognitive assessment is conducted by the Learning Difficulties Practitioner Roshni Shah at her centre in Pinner, to establish the child's starting level for various skills such as Motor, Sensory, Language, Logic/Mathematical, Communication and self-awareness. Very often parents will already have a Statement of Special Educational Needs from the child's school and this can also be used as a preliminary guideline to areas of weakness. When a weakness in development is discovered a programme of physical exercises, sensory exercises and mental agility games is devised to bridge, stimulate and strengthen brain function. These are derived from a pool of existing and well researched programmes such as The Infinity Walk, The Raviv Method and Move to Learn. The starting point is always at the sensory-motor level and building up from there, integrating the more complex cognitive skills with the sensory-motor skills. Children are required to spend 25 minutes each day doing their exercises and the commitment of the parents and child to ensure this is done is vital to the success of the programme. Where the child may benefit, we may suggest to supplement the MCS training with other programmes such as the Alpha to Omega Reading, Writing and Spelling Programme designed for Dyslexic learners by the Hornsby Institute. It works very well with this approach and can produce much faster results, particularly where reading is a major difficulty. |
